This updated booklet produced by the Truss Plate Institute (TPI) and WTCA is the truss industry's new and improved guide for jobsite safety and truss performance. This 8.5" x 11" edition (3-hole punched and spiral bound) includes the most current information regarding the handling, installation, restraining and bracing of metal plate connected wood trusses. To order, visit WTCA's online catalog or complete the BCSI Flyer & Order Form and return it to WTCA.

The 2008 edition of BCSI now includes information on:

  • Hoisting and placement of truss bundles
  • Long span truss installation
  • Hip set assembly and bracing
  • Design and installation of permanent restraint/bracing/reinforcement for trusses and individual truss members
  • Toe-nailed connections for attaching trusses at bearing locations
  • And much more!

NEW! – Check out the brand new Cold-Formed Steel Building Component Safety Information (CFSBCSI) booklet, developed by WTCA's Cold-Formed Steel Council (CFSC).

B1 Guide for Handling, Installing, Restraining & Bracing Trusses
This jobsite handling and safety guide features proper techniques for unloading, storing, lifting, installing and bracing trusses. See B1 in the WTCA Online Catalog for more information.

BCSI-B1 replaces:
• HIB-91 Summary Sheet
• WTCA-B1 Warning Poster
B2 Truss Installation and Temporary Restraint/Bracing
Step-by-step instructions for safe temporary bracing and truss installation. See B2 in the WTCA Online Catalog for more information.

BCSI-B2 replaces:
• TTB WTCA-B2 Temporary Bracing
• TTB WTCA-B2 Commentary
B3 Permanent Restraint/Bracing of Chords & Web Members
This document explains how some web members must be braced or reinforced in the field. See B3 in the WTCA Online Catalog for more information or visit the B3 web page.

BCSI-B3 replaces:
• TTB Web Member Permanent Bracing
• TTB Web Reinforcement
B4 Construction Loading
The B4 document explains how trusses must not support loads from equipment or construction materials until the assembly is properly braced or sheathed. See B4 in the WTCA Online Catalog for more information.

BCSI-B4 replaces:
• TTB Construction Loading
B5 Truss Damage, Jobsite Modifications & Installation Errors
This instructs users how to report damages or alterations to the Truss Manufacturer in order to secure an approved Repair Truss Design Drawing. See B5 in the WTCA Online Catalog for more information.

BCSI-B5 replaces:
• TTB Truss Repairs
B6 Reserved for future use

B7 Temporary & Permanent Restraint/Bracing for Parallel Chord Trusses
These bracing and installation guidelines are aimed specifically at floor trusses manufactured with lumber in the 4x2 and 3x2 orientation. Proper bracing and installation leads to better long term floor performance. See B7 in the WTCA Online Catalog for more information.

BCSI-B7 is a new publication.
B8 Using Toe-Nailed Connections to Attach Trusses at Bearing Locations
Uplift reactions, most often caused by wind forces, may require special connections beyond code-prescribed toe-nailing. This document explains how much uplift resistance one can expect from toenails and options when toe-nailing is not enough. See B8 in the WTCA Online Catalog for more information.

BCSI-B8 replaces:
• TTB Toe-Nailing for Uplift Reactions
B9 Multi-Ply Girders
This document explains how to determine the proper number of plies, attachment methods, types of fasteners and standards of fastener installation. See B9 in the WTCA Online Catalog for more information.

BCSI-B9 replaces:
• TTB Multi-Ply Girders
B10 Post Frame Truss Installation & Temporary Restraint/Bracing
Recommendations for handling, installing and temporary bracing of metal plate connected wood trusses in post-frame construction. See B10 in the WTCA Online Catalog for more information.

BCSI-B10 replaces:
• HIB-98 Post Frame Summary Sheet
B11 Fall Protection & Trusses
Trusses are NOT designed to be fall protection anchors. This document presents several tips to allow framing crews to safely and efficiently install trusses whiles meeting OSHA's fall protection guidelines. See B11 in the WTCA Online Catalog for more information.

BCSI-B11 replaces:
• TTB Fall Protection & Wood Trusses

WTCA/TPI Truss Tags Click for larger image
Additional Loading
This tag indicates the truss has been designed to support heavier loads in this particular location (e.g., attic frame floors, rooftop mechanical units, storage loads). See the WTCA Online Catalog or print the Truss Tag Flyer for more information.
Bearing Location
Place this tag at points where additional or interior bearing supports should be located. See the WTCA Online Catalog or print the Truss Tag Flyer for more information.

Replaces TPI's orange Bearing Location tag.
Concentrated Load
Place this tag at the spot where a truss is to support a concentrated or point load. See the WTCA Online Catalog or print the Truss Tag Flyer for more information.

Replaces TPI's green Concentrated Load tag.
Permanent Lateral Bracing
This tag indicates that one or two lateral braces (and diagonals) may be required on the tagged member. See the WTCA Online Catalog or print the Truss Tag Flyer for more information.

Replaces TPI's green Permanent Lateral Bracing tag.
Do Not Cut, Drill or Alter
This tag emphasizes that trusses should not be cut or modified in any way. See the WTCA Online Catalog or print the Truss Tag Flyer for more information.

Replaces TPI's orange Warning tag.
Multi-Ply Truss
This tag emphasizes that the truss is not to be used as a single ply and must be properly fastened to the other plies. See the WTCA Online Catalog or print the Truss Tag Flyer for more information.

Replaces TPI's green Multiple Plies Required tag.
Strongback Bridging
This tag recommends the installer use 2x6 strongbacks in floor truss systems. See the WTCA Online Catalog or print the Truss Tag Flyer for more information.
Temporary Bracing
This tag calls attention to the dangers of insufficient temporary bracing and directs the installer to the bracing information on the BCSI-B1 and B2 Summary Sheets. See the WTCA Online Catalog or print the Truss Tag Flyer for more information.

Replaces TPI's orange Temporary Lateral Bracing tag.
This Side Up
This tag reduces the chance that parallel chord trusses will be installed upside-down inadvertently. See the WTCA Online Catalog or print the Truss Tag Flyer for more information.

Replaces TPI's orange This Chord Up tag.
Web Reinforcement
This tag identifies particular webs that require reinforcement such as "T-bracing". See the WTCA Online Catalog or print the Truss Tag Flyer for more information.

Replaces TPI's green Special Bracing tag.
